Audi has made a statement with the all new refresh 2018 Audi A5. The original A5 has aged gracefully throughout the years. The new generation model is poised to battle with the likes of BMW and Mercedes with their all new coupes.
The original A5 was a dramatic departure from Audi’s styling. Since then, the company did not feel a need to redesign the car for almost 10 years. A lot of consumers and critics were complaining that Audi had let the A5 model become stale. The new A5 series is competitive with the likes of the new WM 4 series and Mercedes C-Class coupe.
The design of the new 2018 Audi A5 takes a conservative approach and evolutionary trajectory in terms of the design language. The front end has the corporate Audi Design language. There is a single frame grille with and angular boxy shape to the fenders, headlights and hood.
In typical Audi fashion, there are 3 trims to chose from. There is the premium, premium plus and the prestige. The Spool LED headlights are standard on the premium plus and optional if you go for the premium model.
On the side you get attractive looking 19-ich wheels which are decent in size but Audi could have done a better job in terms of finishing. In terms of size, Audi made the new A5 a little bit bigger than the previous generation. The wheel base is about 0.5 inch larger and the overall length is nearly 2 inches longer and the vehicle is surprisingly narrower.
At the back you get LED tail lights with dynamic turn signals which enables them to turn in sequence. The dual exhaust tips are included on the A5. You get quad exhaust tips if you go for the s5.
There is also different body styles on the A5. There is a convertible, cabriolet and a sport back which is four-door hatchback which looks like a sedan.
The premium plus also comes standard with smart key intelligent access with push button start. The interior is a carbon copy of the A4. The seats do have a bit more aggressive bolstering because it is a two door vehicle. There is a 12-way power adjustable seat with two–person memory.
Stepping inside, the 2018 Audi A5 does feel lower compared to the A4. The doors sound compact and solid when they are shut.
Android Auto and Apple car play are standard on every A5 even on the base trim. The premium plus has the 12.3 inch virtual cockpit display. This is part of a navigation technology package that is optional but is standard on the prestige models.
In terms of interior quality, Audi has been class leading in that regard and they have kind of fallen back with the new A5. They are class competitive but definitely not class leading. The dashboard is made from soft touch material. Audi does not offer stitching which is available in competitors like Mercedes.
There is aluminum trim which you can change into wood if you want. The door panels are slightly soft touch with aluminum door handles. The windows are one touch automatic for both the doors. The mirrors are power folding with the help of a control stick.
The steering is electric power assist and has paddle shifters but is not heated. The centre stack looks identical to the A4 with row of vents. There is dual automatic climate control 3 level heated seats.
When you put the vehicle into reverse, you get a backup camera with front and rear parking sensors with trajectory. Audi offers a top new camera system 360 if you go for the prestige trim. Panoramic sunroof is standard with retractable power sunshade.
The rear seat is a little bit cramped and the sedan is recommended if you are looking for a bigger space. There is good head room in the back with LED lighting and one relatively be comfortable for short trips. The seats fold down 60/40 and Audi gives you vents for the rear seats which is nice given the fact is a 4 seater.
The trunk capacity is smaller compared to the A4. The space is deep with a shallow floor. You are looking at around 11.5 cubic feet f space. The sedan gives you 2 cubic feet more.
Under the hood of the new 2018 Audi A5 you get the same power train that is in the A4. It is the company’s new updated 2-liter Turbocharged direct-injection motor with TFSI. It makes 253 horsepower and 273 lb-tq. The s5 offers 3-liter turbocharged V6 which has 354HP. There is a 6 speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The car comes standard with Quattro all-wheel drive system. There is no front wheel in the premium plus model. Fuel economy is rated at 24MPG in the city and 44 on the highway. The car weighs 3600 lbs and Audi says it can get to 60 in 5.5 seconds.
The 2018 Audi A5 is one of the quickest accelerating vehicles in terms of base engines you can buy in the segment. The A5 is impressive when it is in dynamic mode. It floors the accelerator but does however have a little bit of hesitation off the line. This could be attributed to the turbo lag.
The car come with launch control which can be activated by putting it into dynamic mode. The exhaust is loud when the vehicle is in dynamic mode. It sounds decent when you get the revs up. It will always remind you that is a 4-clyinder.
The car has a smooth, stable and controlled ride. The visibility of the road is excellent with a more traditional sense in terms of the styling. The steering could use a little bit more feedback but that has been Audi’s trademark. The 2018 Audi A5 is a good car to daily drive and you will be impressed the way it handles.
The new Audi A5 starts at $42000. This is about $1500 more Vs the old model. The price is valid considering the new performance features that have been added. The premium plus trim starts at $45000 and can go up to $52000 if you add the stickers.
